Kalahari Safari Painting Tours

Our tours are run twice annually, normally February and October and can accommodate 9 guests per tour

** Booking is now open for October 2023 and February 2024 **
The tour is a total of 12 nights/13 days and includes a 5 night stay at Ta Shebube Rooiputs Lodge which is situated on the dunes in the desert of Botswana, 5 nights at Oceangolf Guesthouse and 2 nights travelling to and from the park.

The aim of the tour is to share with you the magic of the Kalahari. This semi-desert receives enough rain to support an array of wildlife and is one of our favourite places to paint. Wildlife sightings are unpredictable, but we would hope to see springbok, oryx, ostrich, wildebeest, red hartebeest, eagles, owls and other birds and possibly lion and cheetah and even, but rarely, leopard. The desert is vast and entirely wild so nothing is guaranteed.
Rooiputs lodge is spectacularly situated in the heart of the red dunes. There are 10 en suite rooms available, linked along the crest of a dune by charming wooden walkways, each has its own deck with a panoramic dune view and a shower open to the stars. All meals are taken at the lodge, they have a bar, small plunge pool and intermittent wifi and we normally have the lodge to ourselves. Take a look at their website: www.tashebube.co.bw
We take two vehicles into the Kalahari to allow guests comfort and a good view, and hope to take a couple of game drives in an open safari vehicle owned by the lodge. Because of predators we are not allowed out of the vehicles on the game drives. We are aware it is not easy to paint in the vehicles so we include mid-morning workshops at the Lodge during our stay.

The total journey from Cape Town is approx 1150 Km, crossing the vast expanse of the Great Karoo. We have an overnight stop on the way, at Keimos (800kms) an oasis town on the Orange River, arriving at our destination next day around lunchtime. The drive is long but crossing the Great Karoo is a worthwhile experience in itself, the roads are good and we aim to make the journey as comfortable as possible. On leaving Rooiputs Lodge we stay in the park for more sightings until late afternoon and from there we drive on to Keimoes for an overnight stay. Before and after our return to Cape Town, there will be workshops in the studio at Oceangolf, painting wildlife and the desert landscape.

Price: On application
Terms & conditions: 50% non-refundable deposit to be paid on confirmation of your place. The balance to be paid 6 weeks prior to the tour

Dear Hazel and John
I must share this painting safari is a “dream come true” for me (two years ago I shared at a bible study meeting on “what is my dream? ” during an intro session).
On this special trip; I received more than I have expected; your humility, passion for painting and generosity in sharing your skills touched me and you will continue to be a source of inspiration. From the bottom of my heart I have to say once again:
"Thank You very much, Hazel and John”
Blessings

Dear Hazel and John
I am writing this from a cold wet and windy St Andrews, and thinking about the lovely Cape Town and Kalahari weather! I had such a marvellous holiday with you - perhaps the best holiday ever! You and John were such excellent hosts, and the whole Cape Town and Kalahari experience was wonderful and very special. I do hope to be able to come again.
Love
- Eileen

Dear Hazel and John
Thank you for your effort to send the video just to accommodate my early departure. I am OK not receiving as I have already learnt so much from you during the trip. I am very impressed with your down to earth approach in leading the group and your desire to share your painting skills to us. What a lovely guesthouse you and John own. I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the Kalahari and the sightings were amazing!
Hope to be able to join your future trips.
Cheers

Dear Hazel, John and All
Thank you so much for a fabulous holiday and for being such a lovely group.
If I am feeling down I just have to look at my photographs and paintings and it always raises a smile. Such a happy time we all had under Hazel and John's wonderful hospitality and what an adventure into the Kalahari! It was a privilege to see all the animals and birds in their natural environment, particularly all the babies - springbok lambs, wildebeest calves, ostrich chicks and especially the cheetah cubs! Also amazing to witness that there will soon be baby lion cubs arriving too :)Thank you Hazel for being so encouraging and generous with your time for us all. You are such a fabulous teacher and artist. It has been wonderful to spend time with you again and I have learnt so much. Thank you John for all your driving skills and for all the fun we had! It has been great to meet you all and I hope that we can keep in touch.
With my love
- Gill xx

Dear John
Thank you so much for a great trip to the Kalahari. I thoroughly enjoyed it. What great sightings we had; the most memorable for me was the cheetah mum and her four young ones on the ridge.
I took this photo of your vehicle with the red dune behind. I thought you might like it.Thanks again for everything and for all your driving - not as wildly as in Hazel’s dream!!!!
Love

SAFARI REVIEWS KALAHARI TRIP OCTOBER 2019

Dear Hazel, John and all.
I had the most amazing holiday with you all. It was truly wonderful. Thanks to everyone.
I will come to the gallery when you are back Hazel to say hello, and yes ive continued painting and look at my fantastic lion photos a lot!

Dear Hazel and John
Greetings from cold and wet Portland. This did not enhance my homecoming. I find my psyche remains in the Kalahari and Capetown
First let me say how much I enjoyed the entire experience. Granted, my experience may not have been the same as the other participants but my appreciation of the entire trip cannot be understated. I would follow you and John anywhere. You made a challenging physical journey an integral part of a trip that will join a short list of Peak Life Experiences. Thank you. The key was looking long enough to see....and, OF COURSE, the two electrical storms!!! I am in the process of moving back into my studio and trying to capture the pre-storm skies, the storm itself and the post-storm calm. John, I want to talk to friends who are golf fanatics but I realized I don't have enough relevant info. How many can you accommodate at OceanGolf and what is the seasonal price range? Names of most popular/prestigous golf courses in the Capetown area? That should be sufficient to take to the major travel agency in Portland and also to hand out to friends who take the big golf trips. No promises but I think you own a hidden gem!
Cheers and gratitude to you both...
- Linda

Dear Hazel and John
Still processing all that happened in the past month. Hope I can translate lots to paper. Thank you for a wonderful adventure in the Kalahari and at Ocean Golf and all the wonderful sightings we had.
Fondest
- Lynn.

“Had a fantastic 9 days in South Africa, painting and going on safari. The accommodation was excellent, the painting tuition unparalleled and the company enormous fun. Everything was so well organized, it was possible to sit back and enjoy every moment. I could not recommend it more highly.”

Hi John, Nice to hear from you, I’m sure you are both well in that lovely B and B of yours, more like a hotel really. Yes John, I’ve just about recovered thanks, what can I say,It was for me my final long haul and what a trip it was, all that I hoped and more, you were a great host John , larger than life in all aspects, entertaining, funny, and able to deal with any situation that arose, and of course I loved the banter. Hazel was brilliant, again able to cope with every whim and demand put upon her by all of us. Knowledgeable about her art and the animals we saw. Great demo’s and inspirational with her palette and paintings. The lodge was extremely comfortable, clean,in a lovely situation, oh yes ,the food was fabulous.! As a group I thought we all got on very well indeed, quite a diverse bunch really, I will remember with fondness those lovely meals on the terrace , everyone chatting, sun shining, a truly lovely place you both have there. Thanks once again for a superb trip both, all your hard work paid off. One to remember for sure and Augrabies Falls were spectacular as well.
Thanks
- Rod

An experience of a life-time I’d have no hesitation recommending this trip to anybody. Myself and my partner Cynthia attended a 11 day excursion with the charismatic John Goatley, owner of the Ocean Golf Guesthouse located at Chapmans Peak, a five minute walk from Longbeach. The main part of the excursion was a 7 day trip to the Kalahari, which proved to be an experience which far exceeded my expectations.
Thanks
- Cynthia & Chris

Finally it was time for my 3rd visit in Cape Town at the Ocean Golf Guest House at Hazel and John came true. Also this time we started for a painting trip to the Kalahari, but now from the Botswana side. Full of joy we drove off with 2 vehicles in Cape Town to our 1st stop with overnight stay in the Ou Skool Guesthouse. For me a new accommodation in the middle of the vineyards with a very nice room and excellent food.
Thanks
- Isabella

Thank you so much for a marvellous trip. It was great being able to paint in the Kalarhari. Thanks Hazel for you informative demos. I picked up a lot of extra information. I was sorry to have missed the finishing off of your lion's head demo.
The Rooiputs thatched chalets were amazing and the food was very good indeed.
Thanks again for a terrific time.
Thanks

Hi John
Thank you for your email but you are addressing someone who has already experienced the holiday of a life time with you and john that was absolutely much better than any one can offer me now, for which I am extremely grateful and thankful to the courage, organisation and enthusiasm of you and John and the other artists through our experiences shared together in the Kalahari, the Tented Village, the journeys there and return and the efficiency of Louise, Ulene, Simba and other staff members who made my stay with you so memorable. [take a breath]
I would not afford the cost of this holiday. That is why I can barely put into words the wonders of our holiday, plus, my skills and confidence as a water-colour artist have received a wonderful boost. Thank you.
All best wishes
- Julia Phillips

Dear John
What an extraordinary adventure!!!
Thank you both so much for the very warm welcome (freezing temperatures and snow here in London) to your lovely home before setting off on our unique journey.
Hazel, thank you for your tolerance when sharing your knowledge and love of watercolours. John, for your amazing cuisine at no.9 and all the organisation and efforts to and from the Kalahari. Please also pass on my thanks to Louise, Ulene and her team and Simba. I will definitely recommend Ocean Golf in the future. Looking forward to seeing you Hazel, in London, in March.
Warmest wishes
- Katrina

Dear John,
Thank you both for the amazing experience, and your generosity at oceangolf and the trip to the Kalahari. We are all now safely home, ahead of thick snow, but with freezing temperatures. I had the misfortune to be downgraded... by B A , it was a very over booked flight which was why it was not allowing Lou to check me in.
I now start a battle for a refund... Hoping to work on an African collage today... the washing and ironing can wait. Love to you both, and again Many Thanks,
- Xx Moira

Dear Hazel, dear John,

Many many thanks to your great staff Ulene and her team, Louise of course and Simba.I shall certainly recommend Oceangolf in the future. Take care, looking forward to seeing you in March in London,
Kindest regards to you all,
- Jacqueline

Life is too short to have missed this trip! Yet again i’ve had a brilliant time with you guys. Fantastic sightings, great food, brilliant drive in the new vehicles.
Thank you for organising everything so well, yet again. Please don’t forget to let me know when you are organising the next trip.
- Cynthia

Yes I am unpacking in cold old Washington State!! What a far cry this is from the wonderful trip to the Kalahari!
Wow, how large those Kalahari Lions are and boy how quick they can move. This trip was one of the highlights of my life. The company of the other people, the food that you managed to cook in the tented camp was fantastic. The wines were amazing too.
Thank you so much for this
- Jennie

What a brilliant trip! You have exceeded yourself this time - a stunning stay at Oceangolf to begin with and to end with.
The Kalahari was just amazing and it was so comfortable travelling up there in your new vehicles and the places you booked en-route were fantastic and once we got into the Kalahari the wildlife we saw was amazing from start to finish. The Lions, all the different type of buck and even the birdlife considering this is a desert......wow what a privilege! The tented campsite near Mata Mata was one of the highlights of our trip. The food that you guys provided was just incredible - what can be done whilst on a safari! I can tell you now that we have some friends that will certainly be booking with your for your next trip in 2018 and we will certainly be going with you again in 2019. Thanks so much indeed
- Chris & Jacks

Wow what an honour it was to do this Kalahari trip with you guys. You were right when you said it would be an amazing experience for me to drive some short periods off road. It was the perfect thing for me to do to get my confidence in driving a 4X4. Also, it was so nice to see Roger & Trish again in Africa. As always the food was delicious & the wildlife was always there for us to photograph.

I have now returned to Canada. I must just thank you for opening the world of Africa to me!
Thanks- Aynn
